Lecturer : Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerald Kell   eMail | Homepage
Term6
Course Classification : Informatics, Intelligent systemsCH3
Language : German Type L Lw
Type of examination : PL  Credits
Method of evaluation : oral examination 30 min
Requirements : Digital technology
Cross References :
Previous knowledge : S1S in informatics
Aids and special features :
Teaching aims : Knowledge of the basic steps at the design process, possibilities and methods for the digital system design in the area from a simple state machine up to the complete microprocessor systems. The most lessons will be concentrated at the hardware description language VHDL as the mostly used tool to design hardware structures up to processor architectures.
Contents :

In the first part methods of hardware designs will be introduced whereby we shall be concentrating on PLDs and ASICs. A state diagram and a signal flow chart will be discussed as basic points of the design flow. >From the practical analysis of different problems we shall be looking at variants of the formulation under VHDL (the most common hardware description language) and the accompanying design results will be characterised. We shall also be going into questions of hardware-software codesign. From this we shall learn about the important discoveries from effective differentiation between parallel and serial hardware structures. Examples from the practical field of work (a simply state machine and a filter structure with floating point operations) will demonstrate the design process. Finally, we shall be making some observations on modelling digital circuits; in addition, and complementing this, the simulation on an abstract level is possible.

Literature : A list of recommended reading will be announced during the lectures.
